Learn To Sew
|
 |
So you have the desire to put needle, thread and material to good use. You are all fired up with enthusiasm, after looking through umpteen dozen magazines and searching the web. The
problem is you do not know where to start. If your mother and grandmother had never taught you the basic's of sewing when you were young, then you would wonder how to begin.
Fortunately for me, my Mother, Grandmother and Great Aunts were all talented in this field. In those days it was essential to be able to sew and it was not uncommon for these women, at the end
of a busy day, to be seen sitting in a comfortable chair with their sewing basket beside them, working away on a current project. It may have been the mending of socks, patching clothes or making a new item
of clothing for one in the family. They also were often seen working on embroidering a doiley which was popular in all households; they used to be placed under a favourite vase either on the sideboard or
coffee table as a decoration to help brighten up the room.
For many years these scenes became less and less common in the average household. So the last two generations in many families have not had personal experience with the art of
sewing. In time there is a cycle and today we are experiencing a return to the desire to sew, though it is not of a necessity as it was in the past. Magazines and the web are helping to promote this return. The problem
is one can easily be confused as there is so much out there. So if you really have a desire to begin, I would like to make a few suggestion how. This is one persons opinion on how to go about it.
Some suggestions:
Visit your local library and talk with the librarians about books on the subject of sewing. Read, Read, Read! There are a number of fine books written by people who have put all their
years of experience down on paper; they want to share what they have learned and to inspire others to see what can be accomplished.
Learn how to cut your material. Today we have many useful tools which are accurate, time saving and cost effective. The best way to learn
is to find your local quilt shop and enrol in a rotary cutting class.
This way you will learn the essentials in cutting cloth also a lot of short cuts that will boost you along. You may wonder were this is going, that you want to pick up needle and thread now, well, you
can, but this way you will learn about material which is the beginning of putting needle and thread to action. Learn the basics first, then in time you will appreciate this knowledge as you progress.
As time goes by I will have tips on how to sew, with shortcuts that I have learned over the years. So, visit this site again in the months to come.
You too will be able to create something with your own hands that will be useful, decorative and that will give you a feeling of satisfaction. Better than when you crave that piece of
chocolate that you had to have, this feeling will linger as you will have something to look back on, an accomplishment, one that you can say to yourself and others - THIS IS WHAT I HAVE MADE.
