Quilting and Sewing Hints and Tips
|
 |
We are often keen and enthusiastic to get to and sew up our new project; we want it done yesterday. Often we are impatient and rush ahead but hold back a little. Think "do I
want this item to look, as the old saying used to be, 'home made'" where everyone will notice that the finished item was run up quickly. Or do you want to have it look as though it was
professionally made. If so you need, I stress need, to take the time in the preparation. This always seems to take forever, the cutting out etc, however if you are going to spend the time sewing to make it look
good, do it right from the start, it will be worth it.
Follow these steps:-
First:- You are at the store, when a piece of material speaks to you as if to say "buy me, buy me", however examine it first.
Read the label, note not just how much it is by the metre, but also note the type of material and see if there are any instructions on its care. If you want to be able to throw it in the wash
when needed, then it is of no use buying material that says to dry clean. If unsure, ask questions, seek out the shop assistant and remember to take the time as it is worth it.
Second:- You have purchased your material! When you arrive home, if possible, wash the material following any instructions closely. Use washing detergent only, as fabric softner
is not required at this time.
The material when washed will release any chemical residue that was used while being produced, plus any excess colour will come out; also if there is to be shrinkage, this will happen as well.
You can either place material in the clothes dryer, or, as I prefer hang it out on the clothes lines to dry.
Third:- When the material is dry, proceed to iron out any wrinkles, if you are not going to cut it straight after, then fold neatly and put aside till later.
Fourth:- The time has come. You have everything organised to begin working on your item. Arrange the tools you will need, have the iron on, as you will need to use it throughout the process. Remember this is worth it.
Fifth:- I must admit, I have assumed that you have read through the pattern instructions, from front to back, haven't you?
Sixth:- Now as you are working along and following the pattern remember, with each step iron the material as this will help you to produce a finished product that you will be pleased with.
