Hi! My name is Gayle, the first quilt I made was back in the 70's, just after our first daughter was born. There was not much interest in Australia at that time in quilt making, so the little I gleaned was from a few American craft magazines that I came across.

This quilt was a small pram quilt, which I made from a small floral pattern, joined together with wool from a second-hand blanket as the wadding, plus plain material for the backing, then bound with wide ribbon for the binding. It looked fine - if you didn't examine it too closely.

In the years that followed, what with 3 small children, where sewing was concerned I was busy making clothes for my 2 daughters and a son. I made a promise to myself, that when the children grew up, I would learn how to quilt properly!

The time came when our first grandchild was born. I went to a local quilt club to learn how to put this promise into action. Since then, quilt making, fabric stashes, all things to do with quilts, became a hobby for me.

My dear husband, Bob, also became involved. He is very clever; he can fix most items that fall apart, or break. So when my sewing machine refused to work, I only needed to ask him and he would make it work again for me. If I do not know to operate a machine, he will assist me, showing me how it works. Also, he will help me with shopping for material, trying to be patient while I decide what fabric to buy. He is also very good with colour combinations so his second opinion is invaluable. Also I hate maths so he comes to my aid in helping me to work out sizes or measurements. A few years ago, he bought me a quilting frame, which is a bonus because as a time saving tool it takes the effort out of putting a quilt together. Bob helps me here as well, being used to working on assembly lines, his knowledge and assistance is invaluable.

Our grandchildren, have benefitted from all the items I have made. From clothing, dolls, doll quilts, bed and cot quilts, toys, and wallhangings. Over the years, they have lots of reminders from Grandma. Other family members and friends have also received gifts I have sewn. I enjoy sewing as it is very therapeutic; there is nothing as relaxing after a busy day then to sit in a comfortable chair, with needle and thread doing hand embroidery, to help me wind down.

Over the years I have learned a lot, due to the fact that each quilt I have made needed to have something new. The last 4 years I have been designing and making originals. Now I have decided to branch out. My aim is to inspire. I make quilts to be enjoyed.
